Thursday 3 April, 2014

Our theme for the first L&D Professionals Forum of 'Find the Talented Stranger Within' and this will be an engaging, interactive session facilitated by Suzanne Mercier of Liberate Leadership.
Tell me more about the theme - Find the talented stranger within
The way we perceive and talk to ourselves influences our capabilities, our actions and our outcomes. When we see ourselves as less than we really are, we deny our talents, skills and successes. We limit our ability to perform at the top of our game. According to research, 70% of people feel like a fake or fraud at some stage in their career and attribute their success to factors outside themselves such as good luck, good timing and other people’s mistakenly positive opinions of them. 33% of people experience those feelings of not being good enough frequently and intensely, causing them to undermine their own possibilities. This feeling is called the Imposter Syndrome.
The
Syndrome only impacts those who have experienced some measure of success. So
someone who was performing well, identified as a high potential and promoted
may suddenly experience the uncertainty of being in a role she/he feels they’re
not up to.
In working
with more than 1000 people, Suzanne has identified 7 typical behaviours we
engage in when we’re triggered into the feeling of not being good enough. Those
behaviours potentially undermine key strategic objectives in business today -
including engagement, collaboration, innovation, high
performing teams and diversity.
performing teams and diversity.
As long
as we are affected by those feelings of being a fake or fraud, we cannot live
up to our potential. We deny ourselves and others around us the benefit of our
talents and experience which directly impacts on our ability to make our unique
contribution as authentic leaders at work.
As
individuals, we want to experience meaning and fulfillment from our work. As
organisations, we are constantly striving for a sustainable competitive
advantage. The answer to both of those needs lies in the personal leadership
that comes from recognising and addressing the Imposter Syndrome.
In this
thought provoking and entertaining session, you will:
*
Understand the problem of feeling not good enough,
why it is a work issue and how it impacts the performance of the individual,
his or her direct reports, colleagues and others they interact with at work.
*
Recognise how and why excess uncertainty in the
work environment triggers these of not being good enough and that most
change situations involve excess uncertainty
*
Identify how people cope with the feeling and
why those behaviours may not be usefulwhen seeking to improve performance
*
Recognise the consequences to the individual of
holding distorted self-view of their own capabilities
*
Understand what it costs the organisation
*
Learn how to help your people step up so they
can share their unique perspective, their capabilities, experiences and
insights, and increase their contribution at work.
